5 Ingredient Recipe
Fish – Cod fillets are easy to find, but any white fish works! So will salmon, shrimp, and scallops! Frozen fillets should be thawed before seasoning and cooking.
Seasoning – Buy it or use this DIY blackened seasoning recipe so you can adjust the ingredients to suit your menu! For a milder seafood seasoning, you can use Old Bay seasoning.
Variations – Want a Creole seasoned cod fillet? Then use a Cajun seasoning instead, like in this easy Cajun shrimp recipe.
How to Make Blackened Cod
- Prepare blackened seasoning and set aside (as per the recipe below).
- Gently rub seasoning onto both sides of the cod fillets, pressing in, if necessary.
- Pan-fry seasoned cod fillets in melted butter and oil until the outsides are blackened and the fish is light and flaky.
Tips for Success
- A cast iron skillet works best to achieve that blackened coating!
- Be sure cod fillets are patted dry so the blackened rub adheres properly before cooking.
- It’s easy to overcook fish, so remove it from the hot pan as soon as it’s done or it will continue to cook. Use a meat thermometer for best results.
- Thicker fillets will take a minute or two longer to cook on both sides.
