Baked Bone In Chicken Breasts are the perfect juicy and tasty entree! When you cook poultry (or any meat for that matter) with the bones intact your food will retain moisture. As they cook, the bones also infuse the meat with more flavor.

How to Prepare Bone In Chicken Breasts
With the ready availability of boneless skinless chicken breasts, you may be wondering why anyone would want to cook bone in chicken breast instead. I do like to use boneless chicken breast for cubing and tossing into a quick stir fry in oil. For most other uses, I prefer bone in chicken breast as it keeps the meat juicy and packed with flavor!
Here are some tips to keep in mind for different methods of preparing bone in chicken breast recipes:
-
Grilled Bone In Chicken Breast
The grill is hot and dry, so for best results, use bone in chicken breast instead of boneless. Always start the grilling process with bone side down on the grill. Keep the chicken breast to the cooler side of the grill to avoid burning the outside before the inside is done. I’ve had good results avoiding that problem by parboiling the breast in salted water for a few minutes before placing on the grill to finish off.
-
Oven Roasted Bone In Chicken Breast
Roasting means to cook in the oven with dry heat. For this method, you’ll use a roasting pan without a cover. For juicy results, you can sub in bone in skin on chicken breast from our roasted chicken breasts recipe. The fat in the chicken skin will keep the meat moist and tender, while browning and crisping up nicely for even more flavor. Plus, the fat drippings can be used to make a great chicken gravy.
-
Slow Cooker Bone In Chicken Breast
Bone in or not, the slow cooker is pretty much the never fail way to cook any cut of chicken! Slow cooking will make your bone in chicken breast fall-off-the-bone tender and juicy too.

Baked Bone In Chicken Breast
For cooking in this manner, follow our recipe below! If you have skinless breasts, place in your pan bone side down and cover. You can use skin on chicken breast for this method too, and the meat will be especially moist and succulent. However, the baked skin will come out white and soggy, and not particularly tasty or attractive. I usually discard the skin after baking this way. Then I sprinkle the cooked breast meat with some fresh parsley or chopped scallions before serving.

What Temp to Bake Bone in Chicken Breast in Oven
So many recipes seem to call for a 350°F oven for cooking. However, chicken benefits from a hotter oven in order to quickly seal in the juices. For best results, bring your bone in chicken breasts to room temperature for no more than ½ hour and then pop into a pre-heated 375 ͦ F oven.
How Long To Bake Bone in Chicken Breast
In general you should bake bone in chicken breast for 45-50 minutes when the temperature is set to 375 ͦ F. But ovens vary, so it’s always best to check the internal temperature to avoid over or undercooking. Chicken breasts are done when they reach an internal temperature of 165 ͦ F, dark meat should be cooked to an internal temperature of 170 ͦ. Another sign the chicken is done is when the juices are running clear.

I don’t understand why under “baked bone in” section it says to cover the chicken but in the actual recipe instructions for the recipe below that you are referred to, it doesn’t say to do that.
Also, under the “what temperature to bake” section, it says in the paragraph to bake at 400 degrees but in the actual recipe instructions it says 375.
Hi Annie, covering the dish is if you are using skinless chicken breasts while the recipe below is for skin on chicken breasts which do not need to be covered. As for the temperature the write up has been updated, thank you for catching that!
Thank you ….I’m not good at cooking chicken and want to be sure to do it right!
