What is Imitation Crab?
Besides being way less expensive than real, fresh crab meat, imitation crab meat (also known as ‘k-krab’) is dyed, crab- flavored starch with pressed white fish, also called ‘surimi.’ It is then shaped into crab-leg looking sticks that look like real snow crabs.
Unfortunately, artificial crab meat varies in appearance and flavor. While this dip is still delicious, spring for the real deal if you can! It’s worth it!
What’s In It?
Low-carb and keto fans will jump for joy over this dip recipe! It is made with just a few simple keto-friendly ingredients.
- Cream cheese
- mayo
- crab meat
- seasonings
Serve with veggies, or even packed into wonton wrappers Rangoon-style for the perfect appetizer!
How to Make Cold Crab Dip
This is the easiest part! Thoroughly drain the crab meat by pressing down on it in a colander. Set it aside so it can drain while you prepare the base.
- Combine cream cheese and mayo until smooth.
- Stir in remaining ingredients and mix well.
Refrigerate for at least an hour and garnish with minced green onion.
My Favorite Low Carb Dippers
Celery, zucchini, daikon radish, broccoli, and cauliflower are all excellent low-carb dippers for cold crab dip. So are thick pieces of cooked bacon cut chip-sized!
Instead of dipping, try making pinwheels with low-carb wraps by spreading a layer of crab dip and rolling up from one end to the other. Slice ‘coins’ that are one quarter to a half-inch thick and arrange on a platter!
Can This Be Frozen?
Crab can easily be frozen. But cream cheese won’t last more than 2 weeks in the freezer before it starts to get watery and grainy.
If you must freeze this crab dip recipe, keep it in an airtight freezer bag. Label it with the date and when you are ready to use it let it thaw naturally. Refresh with a little lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce!
